In this MD Newsline exclusive interview with family medicine physician Dr. Alexis Smith, we discuss the health impacts of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

MD Newsline:

Can you speak to the health impacts of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation?

Dr. Alexis Smith:

“We need to do better, essentially, because these kids, their mental health was already in a perilous state to begin with, they’re at-risk for being teased and bullied in school, and now we have all these bills, basically sending a message to these children that their identity is not equal to other people and that they shouldn’t have affirming care, and that they shouldn’t be allowed to play with everyone else.

And that’s so damaging to someone’s mental health. Many medical organizations like the American Medical Association, the American Pediatric Association, and the American Psychological Association do not support any of these bills.¬†They say that anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is very damaging.”
