Total mesometrial resection (TMMR) and therapeutic lymphadenectomy (tLNE) are two surgical interventions used to treat early cervical cancer. They are both based on the ontogenic cancer field model and have exhibited good locoregional control rates without adjuvant chemoradiation in a unicentric setting. This study, published in the Journal of Gynecologic Oncology, sought to provide prospective, multicentric data to support this surgical method.

Ultimately, it was found that in 116 patients with cervical cancer stages IB–IIA who underwent TMMR/tLNE, the overall recurrence rate was 7.8% in a median follow-up time of 2 years. Locoregional recurrences were found to occur in 6% of these patients.

This study provides prospective, multicentric data to support the use of TMMR/tLNE in treating early cervical cancer. However, a randomized controlled trial is needed to provide further support for this surgical method as a treatment of choice for early cervical cancer [1].
