A retrospective study reports that dietary supplementation with myo-inositol, cocoa polyphenols, and soy isoflavones positively affects the metabolic profile and vasomotor symptoms of menopausal women with metabolic syndrome.

Hormonal changes occurring physiologically during the menopausal transition are associated with an increased risk for metabolic disturbances and vasomotor symptoms. One of the complications of these changes is the development of metabolic syndrome in menopausal women.

This retrospective clinical study investigated the role of dietary supplementation with myo-inositol, cocoa polyphenols, and soy isoflavones in improving metabolic profile and vasomotor disturbances in menopausal women diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. The findings are published in the journal Medicina.

Baseline Characteristics

The authors acquired retrospective data from 200 menopausal women with metabolic syndrome experiencing vasomotor symptoms. At baseline, 12 women had experienced no hot flushes, 56 women were experiencing 2–3 hot flushes, 108 women were experiencing 4–9 hot flushes, and 24 women were experiencing more than 10 hot flushes per 24 hours. At baseline, 8 women had experienced no sweats, 26 were experiencing 2–3 sweating episodes, 156 were experiencing 4–9 episodes of sweating, and 10 patients were experiencing more than 10 episodes of sweating per 24 hours. Mild, moderate, and severe depressive symptoms were present in 18, 174, and 8 patients, respectively. Six patients were underweight, 14 had a normal weight, 154 were overweight, and 28 were obese.

Dietary Supplementation and Improvement in Vasomotor Symptoms

At six months, the authors recorded a statistically significant reduction in the number and severity of hot flushes and sweats in menopausal women. The severity of night sweats also decreased significantly.

Dietary Supplementation and Improvement in Depressive Symptoms

The combined administration of myo-inositol, cocoa polyphenols, and soy isoflavones was associated with a decline in depressive symptoms in menopausal women with metabolic syndrome. While the severity of depressive symptoms decreased, there was a significant increase in the percentage of patients experiencing few or no episodes of depression.

Dietary Supplementation and Metabolic Profile in Menopausal Women

Oral supplementation with myo-inositol, cocoa polyphenols, and soy isoflavones was associated with a significant improvement in the metabolic profile of menopausal women at 6 months. There was a statistically significant decrease in the number of women with non-insulin-dependent diabetes and women with high-risk values for serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Dietary supplementation with the supplement combination also reduced body mass index and waist circumferences. The number of women suffering from elevated blood pressure also decreased by a significant extent.
