C-reactive protein is negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration and may serve as an early disease predictor, according to the results of a retrospective study.

The development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is associated with several risk factors, such as abnormal levels of lipid analytes, the patient’s age, and elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). Only a limited number of studies have investigated the association between lipid analytes and inflammatory markers in patients with AMD.

This retrospective study investigated the association between CRP and lipoproteins in individuals with dry AMD. The findings are published in the journal Cureus.

Baseline Characteristics

The retrospective cohort comprised 270 patients without AMD and 90 patients diagnosed with dry AMD. The mean ages of patients without AMD and patients with dry AMD were 70 ± 7 years and 71 ± 9 years, respectively. The dry AMD patients had significantly higher mean levels of CRP at baseline. The patients and healthy controls did not have statistically significant differences for lipid analytes.

C-Reactive Protein and Lipid Analytes

Healthy controls and patients with dry AMD had significantly different levels of triglycerides and CRP following adjustment for gender and age. Dry AMD patients had higher levels of CRP (3.15 mg/l vs. 2.07 mg/l, respectively) and lower levels of triglycerides (1.32 mmol/l vs. 1.48 mmol/l, respectively) compared to healthy controls without AMD.

Correlation Analysis of C-Reactive Protein and Lipid Analytes

Pearson’s correlation coefficient of levels of CRP with the levels of high-density lipoprotein was statistically significant at -0.24 (p = 0.05). This indicates a significant negative correlation between the levels of high-density lipoprotein and CRP in patients with dry AMD.
